Welcome Message from Chairman

Jay-Ho Chae/ Dongbu HiTek
Chairperson of the SEMI Technology Symposium Preparatory Committee
Transforming uncertain times into infinite opportunities
The SEMI Technology Symposium has emerged as a globally respected technology conference since being launched more than two decades ago.
The extensive experience and knowledge that the Symposium has accumulated as it celebrates its 23rd anniversary stands as a great testament to the contributions made by semiconductor experts from around the globe – both those who have been annually invited as speakers and those who have actively engaged in discussions on the very latest semiconductor technologies.
Since the global financial crisis began impacting our industry about a year ago, economists around the world have made various forecasts. While some have voiced optimistic outlooks, predicting an economic recovery within the next year or two, others have cautioned that we should prepare for a much slower march back to better times.
Not surprisingly, the semiconductor industry was hit hard by the global economic meltdown. We saw the domino effect of the global meltdown strongly impact the IT sector, which in turn backed up semiconductor inventories, which further led to production cuts and business exits. While some companies have been showing positive signs since the middle of this year, we have yet to see any clear signs that the global IT sector will continue to gain traction toward full recovery.
History has taught us that times of crisis can also be times of opportunity. For those of us in the semiconductor industry navigating these uncertain times, the opportunities for future growth will come from driving the continual development of innovative and remarkable technologies.
Quite appropriately, the theme of SEMICON Korea 2010 is ‘Infinite Opportunities.’ The program of the SEMI Technology Symposium, which will be held as part of this event, is also based on this theme.
I am confident that you will find this year's Symposium presentations offering valuable insights as they address a host of timely technology topics including Lithography, Dielectrics, Metals, New Materials and Their Processes, Device Technology, Etching Technology, Contamination-free Manufacturing and CMP Technology, and Electropackage System and Interconnect Products.
We urge you to take and active role in the 23rd SEMI Technology Symposium, where outstanding technologists from semiconductor equipment, materials, and device companies as well as highly respected scholars gather to give presentations on research outcomes and engage in active discussions. I am confident that you will find many opportunities to learn more about cutting-edge semiconductor technologies that promise to be key growth drivers as we continue to seek ways to meet current and unforeseen global economic challenges.
In closing, I would like to thank all who have submitted outstanding papers for this year's SEMI Technology Symposium, industry authorities from around the globe, as well as all committee members who have engaged in planning for the Symposium and the SEMI staff for its sponsorship and support.
Sincerely,

Jay-Ho Chae
