President Lee Jong-soo of Mecaro said, "The localization of semiconductor materials, components and equiment is a joint between large and small businesses and the government."

With Japans export regulations and exclusion of white lists, localization of semiconductor materials, components and equipment has become an urgent national task and has become urgent. Experts, however, say the localization of the sector is difficult for any specific company alone, and the multilateral efforts of the device giant, supplier small and medium enterprises and academic circles and the government should bear fruit. 

Japans Prime Minister Abe has recently pushed the Korea-Japan economic war even more breathlessly, saying, "The policy toward Korea has not changed as much as dust." 

At a time when we need to share our experiences and wisdom on localization, we met with Mecaro President Lee Jong-soo and listened to the process and sincere advice to localize it. Mecaro has successfully localized materials and components used to manufacture semiconductors and is already actively supplying them to large businesses, and recently acquired a 65 percent stake in Kopi Alendi, which develops high-tech equipment needed for the pre- and post-conductor process, for 5 billion won.

- There is a problem with the operation of the global value chain that has been created by countries around the world in cooperation. In other words, one corner of the free trade order has been broken. Besides, were the party. What is the prospect of this phenomenon being temporary or expanding in the future as part of protectionism?

 ▲ Regardless of whether the U.S. presidential election will take place in 2020, protectionism is expected to expand further across the board. The global supply chain, which was established amid the globalization that began in 1980, has become the foundation for both advanced and developing countries such as the U.S. to grow. However, strong protectionism has been gaining momentum again recently as the countrys interests are preferentially prioritized along with the limits of expanding its global supply chain. Both Britains Brexit and Japans recent export regulations to Korea can be seen as part of this protectionism.

After all, protectionism that prioritizes its own interests will likely continue until a new global supply chain of advanced countries is rebuilt, with the U.S. and China focusing on the continued trade friction between the U.S. In fact, the rules of the WTO (World Trade Organization), the representative body of free trade, are breaking, and the U.S. withdrawal   the Trans-Pacific Economic Partnership (FTA) is weakening the ability and binding force of free trade agreements between countries.

- Introduce mecharos technology and products.

One of them is a thin film deposition precursor called precursors. In particular, high-k precursor ZM40 used in ALD (Atomic Deposition) process has been domestically produced and IP has been secured, and is currently supplying it to domestic conglomerates and overseas markets. Based on these ZM40 materials, we have secured and are supplying various deposition film materials used in semiconductors.

In addition, the company localized the heater block, which is a key component of various deposition process (CVD, PVC, ALD, etc.) equipment used in semiconductor processes, and supplies it to device manufacturers and equipment manufacturers. It is understood that the heater block is a core component of deposition equipment that manages heat. In particular, it has the largest market share in Korea with its technological prowess and quality, and has many customers in overseas markets. Such products could be achieved through the active localization will and support of the nations two largest device makers. I pride myself on being a desirable example of co-prosperity between large and small businesses.

- What direction do you think domestic equipment manufacturers should go in the future? And what direction and vision does Mecaro want to take the lead?

▲ Domestic materials, components and equipment manufacturers should pay attention to items that are more dependent on technology competitiveness than simply those that are highly dependent on a particular country. Although global supply network can be used at any time through national diversification policy, high-tech materials, components, and equipment that do not use high-tech technology are not always available in Korea, it is essential to localize them because state diversification cannot solve them. However, there is no need to localize all items. Localization should be promoted   a long-term perspective through  ion and concentration. At this time, it is also a good idea to determine locally made items through co-prosperity of government, large businesses, device manufacturers and suppliers. After all, it is absolutely necessary to advance into foreign markets after securing technical skills through domestic supply.

Mecaro will not be satisfied with its supply relationship with existing conglomerate device makers, and will continue to push for localization projects of key materials based on continued research and development and prior investment, and will focus on building a stable portfolio through product diversification. To this end, the company intends to continue win-win cooperative relations with large business device manufacturers and invest in industrial, academic and research activities to take the lead in localization of core materials for the ever-advancing semiconductor process. It will expand its global supply network based on localization of materials in South Korea, which is the worlds No. 1 supplier of memory semiconductors, and will make continuous efforts to become the top supplier in global light bulbs and heater blocks, which are major business Lastly, I would like to say that transparent management and management mindset are very important in corporate management. I hope to build trust with all the members and customers through transparent management, and I hope that we will move forward with a mid- to long-term vision, not just immediate profits.
